Lives and works in Guatemala City

Sandra Monterroso (Guatemala, 1974) has developed an artistic practice in which she strives to restore her cultural and ancestral heritage as a Mayan artist. Her research raises awareness both of the current political reality and of the history of violence in Guatemala –racial, social and gender–, as well as of the power structures inherited from colonialism, from a situated knowledge, “heal colonial wounds through art, Mayan rituals, and the rituals of other cultures”.

Monterroso holds a BA in Graphic Design in 2001 followed by an M.A. in Design from Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla in Mexico. In 2020, Monterroso earned a PhD in Art Practice from the Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien in Vienna, Austria. Monterroso has been invited nationally and internationally to show her work in venues and exhibitions such as the 56th La Biennale di Venezia, Italia; 12 Bienal de La Habana, Cuba; Frestas - Trienal de Artes, Sorocaba, São Paulo, Brasil; Bienal de Artes Visuales del Istmo Centroamericano, Museo de Arte de El Salvador (Museo MARTE), San Salvador, El Salvador; Indigenous Voices, La Biennale di Venezia, Padiglione America Latina-IILA, Venice, Italy; Art-Action Feministe: Panorama de la vidéo-performance féministe contemporaine latino-américaine, Centre Pompidou, Paris, France; Cosmópolis II, Centre Pompidou, Paris, France; To Weave in Blue, Poema al Tejido, The Martha and Robert Fogelman Galleries of Contemporary Art, University of Memphis, Tennessee, USA; Visionarios, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain.
